Dinner with Friends
The first play Emma directed was Dinner with Friends by Donald Magulies in Decatur, Alabama. The play was performed in 2018 at the historic Princess Theatre.
The friendship of two couples is put to the test when one of the couples announces they are getting divorced. The end of one relationship forces the other couple to examine their own dynamics with each other, and with their friends. Directed in thrust on the stage, audiences experienced an intimate staging of this Pulitzer-Prize winning play. The anchor of the set was a medley of monochromatic frames, which once held moments from the characters’ lives, but now hold nothing but empty space. The void it leaves looms over the characters with the play’s foreboding question: How do we go on?
